Staying Safe on the Fourth and Potential Blog Contests!
First, always read and follow label instructions. I'm sure we're all familiar with the fireworks covered in fancy packaging - what do we remove, and what stays? And how about those Roman Candles - I'm fairly certain that they clearly say "Do not hold in hand" or something similar. Following the instructions printed on fireworks can save you from a variety of future troubles.
If you're a younger wizard, it's important to always have an adult present! Someone has to verify that you aren't firing flaming balls at each other, and that the house is NOT on fire. Make sure that you've always got an adult handy to address potential fireworks hazards before they happen, and someone who is able to respond to any situations.
Next, if this wasn't clear to begin with, only shoot fireworks outside! While that parachute might be fun to fire at your ceiling fan, it's not a good idea. Besides that, your mother's don't need any extra tidying up to do on the fourth!
Always have water handy! In the event that a firework should tip over or shower sparks and light something on fire, you'd best have a garden hose or full bucket ready to put out the unexpected flame!
Never experiment or make your own fireworks, and only light one at a time. As much as you think lighting four rockets at once might impress someone, it doesn't usually work out. I'm also thinking that you intend for the rockets to fly into the air, and not YOU - you know what I'm talking about. There's always that one person that has to try it, and they don't get all four, so they're trying to light the one(s) they missed, while the others are about to go off.
Even worse than that is trying to relight "duds". Don't relight fireworks that didn't work correctly! Wait 15 minutes and soak the firework in water.
Never carry fireworks in your pockets! There was a news story on awhile back about a girl who carried two rocks in her pocket. As it turned out, they had some sort of phosphorous on them, and lit her pants on fire. Fireworks wouldn't be so kind - they explode! Don't take any chances. Store fireworks in cool, dry areas.
Keep away from illegal fireworks! If something is against the rules, don't take any risks - your fireworks fun could end early! If Fireworks aren't currently permitted, don't shoot them off!
If you're an older wizard, be sure to act responsibly, and set a good example for the younger ones!
