Wizard101: Skeleton Key Boss Guide (Verboten Mimic, Captain Hockins, Sapoti)

Wizard101: Skeleton Key Boss Guide (Verboten Mimic, Captain Hockins, Sapoti)

The Wizard101 Test Realm is live again, and there are new bosses to fight and new items to win! This update includes the Verboten Mimic, who will take on forms of previous cheating bosses; Captain Hockins, a cursed rat whose Witch Doctor isn't much help; and Sapoti, a fox trapped in the Hall of Doors who's hoping you'll take his place.

All Skeleton Key Bosses:

In This Guide: Captain Hockins | Sapoti | Verboten Mimic

What's great about the release of some of these new skeleton key bosses is that they've often got loot worth having for just about any level, and they're usually released in sets of three that allow just about any wizard a proper challenge and a unique fight.

With this release in particular, Wizard101 has really balanced out the fights. Sapoti has no cheats to speak of, making him a walk in the park for low-level wizards. In the last release, we had the mid-range boss at 24,000 health in Azteca. This time, we have a boss of only 5,600 health (?) in Zafaria. For our upper-level boss, we've got the Verboten Mimic, which is not only a challenging fight, but will require wizards to recall many of the fights they've experienced in the past!

Captain Hockins, Death, 5600 health; Witch Doctor, Myth, 2900 health

Boss Cheats:
  • This boss has immunity or near-immunity to every hit. Every time he is hit, the attacking wizard will gain a universal piercing blade that scales based on how many times he has been hit. If Wizard A attacks, they will then get a +10% piercing blade. If Wizard B then attacks, they will get a +20% piercing blade. This only applies to hitting the boss, but AoEs and multi-hits do award a blade increase. Additional hits such as weapon casts count as attacks and will increase the percentage. This boss can also be defeated using other pierce methods and without using the blade.
  • I won't go down easy! / Still got a few tricks up my sleeve! / I'll shake this curse yet! Captain Hockins will cycle through these phrases as he is attacked.
  • Uh oh! That's... not good. Captain Hockins will say this if the Witch Doctor is defeated before he is.
  • The boss enjoys using Poison and has a mass stun spell.

Witch Doctor Cheats:
  • Let's keep things under control. The Witch Doctor will interrupt at the start of the battle to cast Saga of Heroes (Myth global - +20% Myth piercing and +15% Myth critical chance).
  • Uh uh uh! We'll have none of that! If a wizard attempts to change the global/bubble spell, the Witch Doctor will interrupt to cast Saga of Heroes (Myth global - +20% Myth piercing and +15% Myth critical chance). Once the minion is dead, the aura can be changed.
  • A curse on the un-punctual! If a player enters a the battle after the first round, the Witch Doctor will steal a pip from them.

Basic Strategy:
  • If you are high enough level to use Shadow Shrike or power up a hit with enough base piercing that you can kill the minion in one hit, go for it. Otherwise, you will want to repeatedly attack this boss (it works faster if multiple people use small attacks) until you have high-powered piercing blades to attack with.
  • If you are hoping to use a global spell, be sure to take out the minion first.

Verboten Mimic, Moon, 40000 health*

Transforms into the following:
Cyrus Drake, Myth, 60000 health
Ghost Dog, Death, 60000 health
Luska Charmbreaker, Balance, 60000 health
Mithraya, Sun, 60000 health
Prince Gobblestone, Moon, 60000 health

Minions summoned:
Hagakure Blade, Storm, 5750 health (Summoned by Ghost Dog)
Seijun Killer, Fire, 3550 health (Summoned by Ghost Dog)
Stellar Protector, Star, 6200 health (Summoned by Mithraya)

General Mimic Cheats:
  • I can change forms all day long! / A treasure of tricks! Beginning on turn one, the Mimic will randomly transform into one of the other bosses and will continue transforming randomly throughout the battle. *This is why his health is technically 60,000. There does not seem to be any rhyme or reason to his transformations. One may last seven rounds while another lasts two.
  • Many of the traps and blades cast by these transformations are protected with Aegis or Indemnity.
  • Note that the Mimic is the same entity throughout transformations - it retains its health value (so you can hit multiple times), shields, minions, and remembers which wizard it has been targeting.
  • All forms of the Mimic can conserve pips and have increased stats (such as critical and block) to account for the adjustment in difficulty.

Cyrus Drake Cheats:
  • You can't trick a mimic! If you attempt to cast a trap on Cyrus, he will remove it.

Ghost Dog Cheats:
  • Your body and soul are mine once more. During his first active round after transforming, Ghost Dog will summon two minions to join the battle. These minions remain even if Mimic transforms again.
  • Again face the poetry of war! Ghost Dog will cast a Death damage over time spell on one enemy.
  • The way of the Sammorai is found in death! Ghost Dog will occasionally choose to cast Detonate on his damage over time cheat.
  • I retain my resolve! If a wizard casts a shield, Ghost Dog will interrupt to remove it.
  • Ghost Dog can cast a mass 35% Death Trap.

Luska Charmbeak Cheats:
  • Only attack if you have been inked! Luska will interrupt to cast a negative charm marked "Inked" on enemies and a 70% trap on all others.
  • Still fighting? Have some more ink! Initially, only the first player will be inked, then he will begin to ink additional players. This occurs as he reaches 75% health, then 50% health, and so forth. If the Mimic has already reached these health levels, Luska will slowly progress into inking all players.
  • If you can still see, don't look at me! If any wizard who is not inked uses a single-target spell on Luska, he will remove all wards and cast Power Link on the wizard who targeted him.
  • Whenever a trap is cast on Luska, he will remove it. You can work around this by enchanting your traps with Indemnity.
  • Luska can cast a mass 30% trap.

Mithraya Cheats:
  • Whenever a spell is successfully cast, Mithraya will cast a Smokescreen (-50% accuracy) on the caster.
  • Protector! Mithraya will summon a Stellar Protector. Be aware that is has sets of triple 50% shields. This minion will remain until defeated, even if the Mimic transforms again. This minion can cast Loremaster.
  • The cards align! Now's your chance! When both a trap and blade are cast, Mithraya will no longer cast Smokescreen.

Prince Gobblestone Cheats:
  • At the beginning of this transformation, Prince Gobblestone will cast three 50% Tower Shields, a 30% Legion Shield (all team members), and Fortify (-20% damage aura).

Basic Strategy:
  • Feints are very helpful, but be careful to only cast them before attacking and on bosses that allow traps. You may want to wait for the appropriate form.
  • Plan on hitting with an AoE, not only because you'll probably have minions, but also because this can potentially prevent additional cheats.
  • You may need to pack heals or Triage to deal with Ghost Dog's DoT cheat, especially if he appears multiple times or is around along enough to Detonate the cheat.
